Abstract

Separation flows are widely used as one of the main methods for enhancing the transfer processes in heat transfer devices of modern power engineering, chemical technology, aviation and space technology. A huge number of works dealt with the study of the flow structure and heat and mass transfer at flow separation behind various barriers. At the same time, the use of separation flows, as a rule, is associated with an increase in hydraulic losses and formation of poorly purged stagnation zones with reduced heat transfer. Therefore, it is important to study the methods of controlling flow separation by introducing additional lowintensity perturbations directly into the recirculation flow zone. There are few works in this direction and they present the primary results of experimental and numerical studies of possibilities of the action of smallscale perturbations on the nature of deformation of a global separated flow.
This report is aimed at the detailed analysis of the current state of this problem, including the studies carried out by the author. The effect of high turbulence of an external flow or specially generated periodic disturbances of different frequency and intensity on separation is also directly relevant to this problem. The researches on the effect of vortex generators of various sizes and shapes on heat transfer enhancement, especially in the channels of compact heat exchangers, are intensively developing now. The investigation results in this direction are undoubtedly interesting for understanding the complex processes of interaction between different-scale turbulent separated structures.
