Abstrakt

This paper presents an approximate analytical solution to the temperature distribution and interface motion in a semi-infinite strip undergoing phase transformation. The analysis removes the insulated boundary at the strip surface of Neumann's solidification problem and takes into consideration the effect of thermal interaction with the surroundings. A perturbation technique is utilized in obtaining an approximate solution in which Neumann's problem, is the basic solution. A similarity solution is obtained to the first order non-linear free-boundary problem. Unlike Neumann's problem, the system is shown to have a steady state solution. The problem was also solved numerically using finite difference approximations. Comparison between the perturbation and numerical solutions are presented.
