Abstrakt

In a previous paper [l] the authors presented an empirical correlation for the Nusselt number for heated cylinders buried horizontally in a liquid-saturated porous medium. The independent variables were Rayleigh number, dimensionless depth and aspect ratio of the cylinder. The data base for the correlation was limited by the onset of nucleate boiling at high heat input because the test bed was not pressurized. This paper presents a new correlation that extends to higher Rayleigh numbers. The basis of this extension is a numerical computation using volume averaged transport equations for conduction and natural convection heat transfer. The new correlation also has a greatly expanded experimental data base covering a wider range of aspect ratio and dimensionless burial depth. The standard deviation of data, including experimental and numerical results, from the correlation is 11.4%. In addition to the new correlation, the calculated steady state dimensionless isotherms and streamlines are displayed.
