Abstract

Temperature profiles and local heat transfer coefficients were experimentally measured for a disk rotating in air. For local Reynolds numbers less than 2.4 × 105, the profiles and heat transfer coefficients exhibit good agreement with theoretical laminar predictions. Time fluctuations in the profiles were observed for Reynolds numbers between 2.4 × 105 and 5.5 × 105 indicating the presence of turbulence. These profiles could best be represented by a 1/5 power profile rather than the 1/7 power profile normally assumed. A prediction for the average turbulent Nusselt number based on the integral energy equation assuming a 1/5 power temperature profile is presented.
