REFLECTANCE OF A SCATTERING MEDIUM CONTAINING POLYDISPERSE NONSPHERICAL PARTICLES
Abstract
This study is concerned with scattering from matrices containing polydisperse, nonspherical titanium-dioxide particles which are typical of paint layers. Experimental measurements of the bidirectional reflectance at wavelengths of 0.45µm and 0.60µm are compared to predictions based on the radiative transfer equation using the single-scatter Mie equations to determine a phase function based on a mean diameter and a scattering cross section weighted according to the particle-size distribution. The particles are suspended in a glycerol matrix between glass slides at particle-to-volume concentrations of approximately 0.001 to 0.30 and at thicknesses of approximately 180µm to 800µm.
