Sinopsis

Spray column heat exchangers can be used for countercurrent heat transfer between two immiscible liquids. The drops are formed by breakup of liquid jets. Wakes are formed by liquid that has reached the drops' temperature. Parts of wakes are shed periodically from alternate sides of the wake and are replaced by new continuous phase, which exchanges heat with the drops on its way to the wake. When the drops coalesce at the end of the column, the wakes are shed and flow back. At the inlet of the continuous phase, the shed wakes mix with the continuous phase A mathematical model is presented for heat transfer in a spray column. The effect of the operating parameters, the application of the theoretical model to experimental data and axial mixing models are discussed.
