This paper presents a method for determining the stability characteristics of a general thermodynamic system from measurements of the random variations (noise and signal) of a single variable. The method is applied to study the dynamic behaviour of a helically-coiled electrically heated once-through vapour-generator in a parallel channel arrangement. Analyses of the results show that the parametric trends of the density wave oscillations of the system are in accord with other investigators' findings.
