Numerical Study of Combined Heat Transfer Problem in a Pilot Furnace with a Non- Participating Medium
Sinopsis
A three-dimensional model for a parallelepiped furnace with a steel sample inside is developed. Inside the
furnace there is a radiative shield that contains a zone in which a measurement device can be installed. The
model was solved using the Finite Volume Method, considering natural convection coupled with heat conduction
of solids and heat exchange by radiation. Parametric studies of the geometry of the radiative shield and
emissivity of the sample were conducted to ascertain their influence on the heat transfer rate calculated at the
position of the measuring device. Furthermore, tests were performed for several electric powers of resistances
placed in five of the walls, as well as for different temperatures of the sixth wall, which was cooled. One of the
results of these studies was the feasibility of obtaining the sample temperature in front of the shield without
contact if the heat transfer rate at the top of the shield and the temperature at the bottom wall of the furnace are
known.
