IMPROVING POLYMER PROCESSING TROUGH HEAT TRANSFER MASTERY: A NEW CHALLENGE
Sinopsis
For polymer processing, the mastery of the temperature time history is a key-point to optimise the process. The thermal databases, and the corresponding equipments and methodologies are again too poor, especially for a non-isotropic temperature and state dependent properties. The thermal models are not sufficiently developed and in situ validated to be reliable. The couplings between physical, chemical, thermal, mechanical (of fluids and solids) phenomena are not enough properly described. We analyse two very typical process examples to illustrate these three points: first the injection molding of polymers and of composites made of glass fibres and semi crystalline thermoplastics and secondly the injection of thermosetting resin on woven reinforcements. Indeed, for these two processes software packages exist, allowing the virtual manufacturing of pieces. While developing the sequence of conception and moulding of a piece, and the optimisation of the process parameters, we will situate the limits and the stakes of the experimental analysis and of the simulation of heat transfer.
