Résumé

This paper presents numerical finite-difference solutions of combined natural and forced convection through a vertical tube. The fluid enters the computational region isothermal and fully-developed, and flows upward through the vertical tube. The heated section of the tube has a constant temperature wall. Solutions are found for Grashoff numbers from 105 to 106, with a Reynolds number of 100. These values of the Grashoff number extend well into the range where laminar flow is unstable and unsteady. Details of the flow are shown in streamline and isotherm maps. Local values of the Nusselt number and the friction factor are presented. In cases where the flow is unsteady, time-averaged values of these parameters are evaluated. It is shown that buoyancy effects impact significantly on the fluid flow through vertical tubes.
