Résumé

A combined experimental and numerical simulation study has been conducted to investigate the details of a natural convection flow (Ra = 1.7 × 108) in a cavity heated from below. Simulation results show good agreement with experimental results, thus complementing each other to reveal the complex and transient nature of this three-dimensional flow. Results are presented as experimental and numerical particle tracks in various planes in the flow, together with temperature profiles and overall heat flux data. Also, the plume formation and resultant heat transfer mechanism are investigated.
