Résumé

An experimental study of the heat transfer and friction characteristics of the Cal Gavin "Heatex"* insert is described. A horizontal concentric tube heat exchanger is used to study application of three wire inserts, each varying in the degree of heat transfer augmentation achieved. During heating and cooling of fluids exhibiting Prandtl numbers in the range 18 < Pr < 530, with Reynolds' numbers varied between 10 and 3000, empty tube Nusselt numbers are increased by a factor of four at equivalent Graetz number.
Heatex heat transfer results are compared graphically with those of empty tube, helically coiled tube and twisted strip flows. On the constant pumping power basis, the inserts are shown to offer degrees of heat transfer enhancement which compare favourably with these other techniques. The inserts are of particular use for fluids of high viscosity.
