COLLAPSE OF STEAM BUBBLES IN SUB-COOLED WATER

Experimental data obtained from steam bubbles collapsing, while rising through water sub-cooled from 5 К to 36.6 К at pressures of 1 bar and 2 bar were compared with existing quasi-steady state theory and an elaboration of the theory allowing for the bubble surface velocity. This shows that both theories overpredict the collapse time. The data indicate a decrease in collapse Fourier number with increase in Jakob number or steam flow rate, or with decrease in pressure. A semi empirical correlation, based on quasi-steady state theory, but including allowance for a change of temperature due to pre-detachment condensation, enabled the bubble rise height to be obtained.
