Aspects of Transient Modelling of a Volumetrically Heated Porous Bed: A Combination of Microscopic and Macroscopic Approach

The present paper describes the development of a tool which combines micro- and macroscopic approaches to simulate the formation, structure, effective properties and thermohydraulics of a liquid saturated, volumetrically heated porous medium. The bed is formed on the basis of a discrete procedure that uses specific numerical deposition algorithms to account for the physics of the process and provides values for the relevant effective properties of the media, namely porosity, permeability and thermal conductivity. Following the structural and effective properties characterization of the porous matrix, a continuum approach is adopted that employs the previously determined transport coefficients and solves the mass, momentum and energy conservation equations to obtain temperature, liquid fraction and mass flux profiles along the porous media. To facilitate the numerical solution of the resulting system of partial differential equations, an enthalpic approach is employed that relates temperature and liquid fraction in the boiling two-phase region of the layer. The effect of capillarity on the vapor/liquid counterflow and the liquid fraction distribution in the porous media is investigated in some detail.
