Resumo

A bayonnet tube heat exchanger consists of a circular tube, capped at one end, in which is placed a second tube. A gap is left between the bottom of the inner tube and the cap on the outer tube, so that a fluid path consisting of the center tube and the outer annul us is formed. Heat is transferred through the outer tube to a secondary fluid. The resulting arrangement requires only one penetration through the pressure vessel and is free of bending and axially compressive stresses.

This paper derives the basic equations needed to assess the performance of a bayonnet tube heat exchanger and compares the predictions to a group of test data. The effects of varying the primary flow direction and the inner tube diameter and thickness are presented parametrically. It is demonstrated that the performance can be significantly enhanced by the proper sizing of the inner tube.
