Resumo

Optical techniques are very powerful methods in experimental heat transfer due to their non-intrusive nature, ability for local measurements and accuracy. In the present experimental analysis of horizontal fin arrays, the method of differential inter-ferometry has been utilised. Natural convection heat transfer from arrays of fins of three materials namely aluminum, brass and mild steel have been studied both in the steady state and under transient conditions, for various levels of heating. Experiments have been conducted for four inter-fin spacings namely 10 mm, 15 mm, 20 mm and 25 mm and the experimental findings discussed in detail. A generalised correlation has been proposed for heat transfer from the fin array in the transient in terms of the steady state correlation which had been proposed earlier, based on the experimental findings. Comparison of the present experimental results has been made with results from previous investigations wherever possible.
