AN EXPERIMENTAL STUDY OF NATURAL CONVECTION HEAT TRANSFER FROM A HORIZONTAL CYLINDER IN HIGH RAYLEIGH NUMBER LAMINAR AND TURBULENT REGIONS
Resumo
In order to elucidate the physical laws for the
natural convection heat transfer from a horizontal
cylinder in the high Rayleigh number region, special
efforts are taken to extend the Rayleigh number
range of the experimental data. Data in the turbulent
region have been monitored and full coverage of the
high Rayleigh number laminar region and the
transition region have been realized. The results fail
to support either the Morgan's or the McAdams'
recommendations on the criterion for transition.
Water data reveal that the laminar correlation
remains valid for Rayleigh number up to 3.30 × 109.
New criteria for transition as well as new heat
transfer correlations in the high Rayleigh number
regions are proposed.
