Resumo

Numerical and experimental studies are carried out on the natural convection heat transfer to air from an array of vertical parallel plates, each of which is heated uniformly on one side. Two-dimensional Navier-Stokes and energy equations including the heat conduction through the plates are numerically solved under the conditions of modified Grashof number Gr* = 2.3×103 - 8.8×105 and aspect ratio L = l/h = 8-30. Flow and heat transfer are measured for the array of five vertical parallel plates. The induced flow rates and local Nusselt numbers obtained numerically are compared with the experimental results and the existing theoretical ones. A correlation expression for the local Nusselt number is proposed based on the numerical solution. The expression can predict the local plate temperature within an error of ±5 %. Further, the effects of package protrusions are investigated based on the additional calculations and experiments. Then the proposed expression is found to be applicable to the plate with packages when an effective board spacing is used as the characteristic length.
