Аннотация

Measurements are reported of the swaying frequency of plumes from a horizontal line source in a rectangular enclosure partially filled with water. Plumes sway about the vertical plane containing the line source while the fluid beneath the line source is stagnant and stably stratified. The intersection of the plume with a horizontal plane above the line source forms an approximately sinusoidal contour whose wavelength depends principally on the immersion depth of the line source.
A "compound pendulum" model of the plume and the ambient fluid is analyzed to develop a prediction of the swaying frequency. The resulting formula agrees well with the experimental results.
