The adsorption column is used in many industrial applications including the drying, degassing, refining and other processes. Adsorption and desorption phenomena, which take place in the column, are influenced by the kind of adsorbent employed and of fluid around the adsorbent as well as by their temperatures and pressures. Since heat is generated and absorbed in the column during adsorption and desorption processes, respectively, the accurate prediction of the mass and heat transfer is of vital importance to optimizing the column design and its process applications.
The authors previously reported the dynamic behavior of an adsorption column using carbon dioxide as adsorbate under uniform column wall temperature. This paper describes the results of experiments on the mass and heat transfer in an adsorption column of 245mm in diameter and 1000mm in height, using steam as adsorbate and 2mm-diameter γ-alumina particles as adsorbent, with a heating tube of 17.3mm in outside diameter in the column.
It was found that, due to the effect of heating, the adsorption-desorption thermal swing would take place at a higher level of mean temperature the closer the distance to the heating tube. Also to increase the adsorption-desorption would require not only heating but cooling as well.
