Аннотация

The objective of the present study is to investigate experimentally heat transfer characteristics of natural convection arising in a vertical square enclosure filled with water dispersed with nanoparticles of alumina (Al2O3) (nanofluid). The volume-mean diameter of the alumina particles was measured to be 102 nm. The water-based nanofluid dispersed with various mass fractions of the alumina particles ranging from 0.36% to 10.04% was prepared. The Rayleigh number varies in the ranges of 2.73×106 ∼ 2.82×107. Depending on the Rayleigh number as well as the mass concentration of the alumina particles, experimental results reveal that dispersion of the nanoparticles in water may result enhancement or reduction in the heat transfer rate across the enclosure. In particular, for the nanofluid with particle mass concentration not higher than 1% significant heat transfer enhancement was observed; while for that with higher concentration heat transfer reduction was found.
