MEASURING THE HEAT TRANSFER PERFORMANCE OF NUCLEAR REACTOR FUEL ELEMENT CLUSTERS USING- THE TECHNIQUE OF SUPERPOSITION OF TEMPERATURE DISTRIBUTIONS

This paper shows how the heat transfer performance of a channel of Advanced Gas Cooled Reactor (A.G.R.) 36-pin fuel clusters can be determined by heating only six of the pins in each cluster. The experiments are run in such a way that the temperature distributions can be superposed. The experimental results are processed by computer to yield the mean heat transfer performance and other more detailed information which this method gives. For instance the pin temperatures in the cluster are readily obtained for any heat flux distribution.
The technique is used to compare the performance of a transverse ribbed cluster with one containing pins having helical ribs. The improved heat transfer performance and the advantages of gas mixing promoted by the helical ribbing are demonstrated.
