COMPARISON OF SELECTED TWO-PHASE CRITICAL FLOW MODELS WITH DATA FROM THE MARVIKEN CRITICAL FLOW TESTS

The Marviken Critical Flow Tests are among the few experiments to provide two-phase critical flow data at large scale. These tests were all blowdowns of a pressure vessel filled with water at initial pressures up to 5 Mpa, subcoolings up to 50°C and test nozzle diameters up to 0.5m.
In this study, stagnation conditions measured during the Marviken blowdowns are used to predict the critical flow rate using six different critical flow models. These predictions are compared with measurements of the flow rate. Of the models studied, the one best able to predict the trends observed in the data is a two-fluid model recently proposed by H. Richter. Other, less sophisticated models are able to predict segments of the data but not the entire data base.
