TURBULENT NATURAL CONVECTION HEAT TRANSFER IN VERTICAL SINGLE WATER-FILLED CAVITIES

Abstract

An extensive programme of experimental work on turbulent natural convection heat transfer in single vertical water filled cavities of aspect ratio 1.5 to 61 has been completed. Results are presented for the fluid temperature distributions in the cavities and for the transition from laminar to turbulent natural convection heat transfer. Data are given for overall heat transfer across the cavities and for local heat transfer from the hot face. The results for overall heat transfer show reasonable agreement with the correlation of MacGregor and Emery [4]. The local heat transfer data are in accord with values predicted from theoretical equations given in the literature for heat transfer from an isothermal flat plate in an isothermal fluid.
