Abstract

A mixed finite difference-Galerkin numerical technique has been used to solve the Darcy-Oberbeck-Boussinesq equations for natural convection in a horizontal porous layer. The use of the mixed finite difference-Galerkin method requires specifying the wavenumber. This is done through the use of a stability functional which is obtained from nonequilibrium thermo-hydrodynamic stability. It is found that at the preferred wavenumbers the functional is linear with Rayleigh number. Results are presented for the Nusselt number and preferred wavenumber as functions of the Rayleigh number and Darcy number. Comparison with experiment is made and is found to be good.
