Abstract

Heat transfer by turbulent free convection from a plane vertical surface to near-critical carbon-di-oxide has been studied theoretically using turbulent kinetic energy model for both constant wall temperature and constant wall heat flux conditions. The conservation equations for the turbulent kinetic energy along with those for momentum and energy are solved using the Patankar-Spalding implicit finite difference scheme.

Results are obtained for carbon-di-oxide at a pressure of 75 bar and for a range of temperature difference from 2 K to 100 K for constant wall temperature conditions. For constant wall heat flux conditions the wall heat flux was varied from 5000 to 25000 W/m2.

The predicted results are compared with the available correlations based on experimental data and found to agree within the quoted scatter of the experimental data.
