SUBCOOLED AND BULK BOILING CORRELATIONS FOR THERMAL DESIGN OF STEAM GENERATORS

Abstract

With special reference to steam generators (natural circulations and once-through types) for pressurized water reactors but with a wider field of applications to conventional steam generators the present research provides design correlations for both the subcooled and bulk boiling regimes. Many of previous correlations have been compared and critically discussed and tested against a consistent set of new experimental data (more than 900).
New data have been obtained in closely related experimental conditions: full length of the heated test section (L=10 m, D=12.9 mm), flowrates from 300 to 4500 Kg/m2 s, and pressure of 70 bar, whereas existing correlations often refer to scalar reduced test sections (shortened heated tubes, lowered pressures, fluids other than water). Often, reference situations pertain more to nuclear reactor cores (short lengths and high heat fluxes) than to steam generators (extended lenghts and relatively reduced heat fluxes).
For subcooled boiling allowance is made to the boundary conditions (i.e. forced convection and bulk boiling); for bulk boiling a dimensional analysis has led to more appropriate groups. Suggested correlations fit new data within ±25% (R.M.S.=12%) for the subcooled regime (126 data) and within 30% (R.M.S.=16%) for the bulk regime (762 data) ; their application to steam generators design is straight, reliable and simple.
