Abstract

A simplified form of the one-dimensional compressible non-isentropic fluid flow equations with specific boundary conditions is used to describe a gaseous heat-exchanger system. The model is able to describe both density-wave and acoustic wave oscillations. Sufficient conditions for linear instability of the acoustic-wave and density wave problems and expressions for the linear frequency of oscillations are derived from the shorttime wave response of the system. These compare favorably with the stability results obtained from an experimental system with nitrogen as the test fluid.
