A BAND SPREAD METHOD FOR REMOTE SENSING OF HOT GAS TEMPERATURES

Abstract

A spectroscopic method is proposed for remote sensing the temperature of a hot gas from its emission spectrum. It is based on the inherent spreading feature of the peak of a P or R branch which shifts away from its band center as temperature increases. Such a band spread method is better than the conventional spectroscopic techniques in that no prior knowledge of the emissivity, concentration or physical path length of the remote gas is necessary. It is shown that the existing spectral absorptivity or transmissivity data at elevated temperature can be used to correlate the peak positions of an emission spectrum as a function of the temperature. Useful correlations needed for the method have been obtained for six gases: CO, NO, S02, C02, H2O and CH4.
