Large Eddy Simulation of Turbulent Natural Convection Flows in Cavities
Abstract
We present in this paper a LES approach for natural convection flows based on an original local diffusivity
model independent of the subgrid viscosity. In a first step, as a test configuration, we present results obtained for
a 2D differentially heated cavity at a Rayleigh number of 5.1010. Comparison with DNS results shows the
improvement of the thermal diffusivity model over a local Reynolds analogy using a constant subgrid Prandtl
number. In a second step, laminar regime is investigated for a 3D cavity and Rayleigh numbers up to 107,
Finally, LES approach is applied to a turbulent configuration in order to evaluate the influence of the 3D aspects of the flow on the thermal transfer in the cavity.
