Abstract

The natural convective heat transfer in the concentric and eccentric horizontal cylindrical annular enclosures were studied experimentally using a Mach-Zehnder interferometer. Both the inner and outer cylinders were held to be isothermal, with the former at a higher temperature than the latter. Radius ratios К investigated were 2.68, 2.32, 2.01 and 1.77, while the dimensionless eccentricity ε ranged from -0.50 to 0.35. GrL varied from 4.6 × 102 to 3.8 × 104. Local and mean Nusselt numbers, and local and mean equivalent thermal conductivities were evaluated from interferograms. Plots of local equivalent thermal conductivity versus azimuthal angle at various GrL, and mean equivalent thermal conductivity versus GrL at various ε for both the concentric and eccentric annuli were given and discussed.
