Abstract

A spiral heat transfer augmentor has been used to enhance the heat transfer inside the tubes in shell and tube heat exchangers. When it is driven in a reciprocating motion in the direction of the tube axis with the help of one or two reinforcing wires by a driver, the augmentor cleans the scale on the inner surface of the tube. Based on an experimental investigation, the relations among the heat transfer, drag, effectiveness of cleaning the foul, fouling rates and geometric variables of the cleaner-augmentor have been found. This paper proposes a comprehensive evaluation criterion of the cleaner-augmentor performance from a viewpoint of selecting the geometric variables. The entropy generation analysis was applied to the cleaner-augmentor phenomenon. The Gouy-Stodola theorem applied to the total entropy generation caused by the cleaner-augmentor yields an expression of an exergy loss. Minimization of the exergy loss, with the help of optimum technique, provides a set of optimal geometric variables of the cleaner-augmentor.
