Abstract

Two dimensional shear layer behind a splitter plate was simulated by numerical computations. Attentions were paid to (1) the vortex formation and the related transport process of heat and momentum in relation to the flow conditions and (2) the effects of the density-stratification on the vortex formation and transports of heat and momentum. The following are concluded. (1) Formation and coalescence of vortices are simulated. The experimental findings of the periodicity of vortex formation, time-averaged velocity profiles and the momentum thickness are predicted fairly well. (2) The entrainment of surrounding fluids into vortices is simulated. The laminated layer are formed in the vortices which enhances the mixing of the fluids. (3) Computations simulate that the density-stratification retards the vortex formation and the transports of heat and mass. The reason of the effect is demonstrated.
