EFFECT OF PRESSURE ON FILM BOILING HEAT TRANSFER FROM HORIZONTAL CYLINDERS IN SATURATED LIQUID HELIUM

Abstract

Effect of system pressure on film boiling heat transfer from horizontal cylinders with the diameters ranging from 0.08 to 2.0 mm in saturated liquid helium was investigated experimentally at pressures ranging from 12 to 199 kPa for a wide range of cylinder surface superheats up to around 500 K. These experimental data are compared with the correlation recently developed by the authors slightly modifying the approximate analytical solution of a theoretical model for pool film boiling heat transfer from a horizontal cylinder based on laminar boundary layer theory. Though the experimental results for the cylinder with the diameter of 0.08 mm at various pressures agreed with the values calculated from the correlation within ± 10%, those for the diameters larger than 0.3 mm became somewhat lower than the calculated values at the higher pressures. By replacing the coefficient of the correlation including the non-dimensional diameter which is dependent on the diameter and pressure with the one including only the cylinder diameter, an extended correlation to describe them was derived. The values calculated from the correlation agree with the experimental data for the cylinders of 0.3 to 2.0 mm in diameter within ± 5%.
