Abstract

Two dimensional melting of a solid phase change material in a rectangular enclosure heated from one side is simulated numerically. The simulation is carried out by treating the process as Quasistatic. During each quasi-static step, the steady natural convection equations are solved by the finite element method and the new position of the solid-liquid interface is calculated. The interface shape was found to agree well with the one from experiments for most part of the interface barring the regions near the bottom and top. While considerable work on this topic has been reported in the literature, in this paper an investigation of the problem by a relatively new numerical method is presented. The influence of aspect ratio is investigated.
