Abstract

In the present experimental and numerical study, we propose a control method of the Karman vortex with the wake heating and examine the suppression mechanism of the Karman vortex. A heating screen is set up behind the square rod to control the Karman vortex and it induces the buoyancy flow in the wake region. It is observed from both the visualization and the numerical simulation that the Karman vortex decays with an increase of buoyant force, and eventually the structure of the Karman vortex transforms into a plume-like flow pattern which is recognized as the disappearance of the Karman vortex. Then it is found out that the inverse flow brings the hot fluid in the downstream region from the heating screen to the upstream region behind the square rod and the induced buoyant force suppresses the release of the Karman vortex. Furthermore, the critical condition for the disappearance of the Karman vortex can be estimated as Rad- 2/5 /Ped = 0.10 ~ 0.25.
