Abstract

The Comanche Peak Steam Electric Station (CPSES) consists of two four-loop Westinghouse Pressurized Water Reactor (PWR) nuclear power plants operated by TU Electric. Since initial operation, TU Electric has invested significant effort enhancing plant reliability by reducing plant trips and turbine runbacks. As part of this ongoing effort, the Heater Drains System had been identified as a plant system which has the potential to contribute to plant trips and turbine runbacks. A task team was established to study the system design and recommend any modifications that could be made to enhance its response to plant transients and thereby enhance plant reliability. To facilitate analysis of the system response to plant transients, a project was initiated to develop a computer model of the Heater Drains System. This paper describes the development and use of a RETRAN-03 computer code (McFadden, 1992) model to analyze the response of the existing Heater Drains System to secondary plant transients and to develop a more robust system design.
