Abstract

A preliminary study on condensation heat transfer in a horizontal tube with a Υ-type insert has been performed. The basic idea of introducing this type of insert is to eliminate a part of the condensate from the inner-wall surface and to thin the liquid film within the horizontal tube. That is, with the insert, the rate of accumulation of the condensate at the bottom of the tube can be reduced by eliminating the condensate flowing down from the upper part, and at the same time, the liquid film newly starts just below the tips of the wings of the Υ-type insert to form a thinner layer. Thereby, both the effective heat transfer area and the thermal conductance (through the liquid film) increase at the lower part of the tube, and, consequently, the total heat transfer rate is expected to be larger with this type of insert. Through a simplified analysis based on the Nusselt assumption, the heat transfer performance of the condenser tube was predicted to be larger with the insert. Experiments have been performed to assess the effectiveness of the Υ-type insert for heat transfer augmentation.
