Abstract

In a compressed air energy storage gas turbine (CAES-G/T) system, the variation of the air temperature inside the cavern with time is crucial for the system design. To obtain the fundamental information for the air temperature variation, the thermofluid behavior of the air inside the cylindrical cavern has been studied. A two-dimensional model which focuses the free convection on the crosssectional plane was developed, and the validity was checked by comparison with a model experiment. The heat transfer coefficient at the cavern wall and the resulting air bulk temperature was evaluated for the pilot plant in Japan.
