Abstract

Direct numerical simulation(DNS) was performed for a turbulent channel flow with time-mean temperature linearly varying in the spanwise direction. With this simple flow case, spanwise transfer of heat in wall turbulence was explored. The computed flow field was confirmed to be in good agreement with the existing DNS result for a channel flow obtained by Kasagi et al.(1992a). General trend of the presently calculated spanwise eddy diffusivity of heal shows similarity to the experimental data reported by Maekawa et al.(1991). However, there is remarkable discrepancy between both results in the vicinity of the wall. The numerical result demonstrates that the spanwise turbulent heat flux is nearly in the local equilibrium over the whole channel width excluding the viscous sublayer.
