EFFECT OF CHANNEL LAYOUT ON THE THERMAL PERFORMANCE OF PULSATING HEAT PIPE UNDER LOCAL HEATING CONDITION

Abstract

The thermal performances of pulsating heat pipes (PHPs), which have various channel layout, were compared. Meandering rectangular channel of PHP was developed by etched silicon on the glass substrate, and it was covered with a glass to visualize the fluid motion. The glass substrate was used to emphasize the effect of channel layout by minimizing the substrate conduction. PHPs with 10 turns had a dual-diameter channel, and HFE-7000 was used as the working fluid. The heating area was positioned at the middle of the PHP, and the size of it is approximately half of PHP's width. The series of experiments were conducted for three different types of PHPs, i.e., symmetric type, increasing type, and random type. For each type, we chose the particularly PHPs whose thermal performance is expected to be higher than others using the concept of the dissimilarity. Typical type of PHP had a high thermal resistance than others because the working fluid in the only limited channel oscillated actively. However, three other types of PHP s have a much lower thermal resistance than typical type of PHP due to the active oscillating motion in all channels. Among three different types, the random type of channel layout had the lowest thermal resistance.
