# PARAMETRIC STUDY OF BYPASS FLOWS THROUGH INLET/INLET WALLS ON PM DEPOSITION IN HEXAGONAL CHANNEL DIESEL PARTICULATE FILTERS

## Abstract

The distributions of PM deposit thickness on hexagonal channel diesel particulate filters (HEX DPFs) are numerically simulated using Darcy's law. There are two types of flows in HEX DPFs. One is a conventional wall-through flow (an Inlet/Outlet wall-through flow), which traverses a wall between inlet and outlet channels (an Inlet/Outlet wall). The other is a bypass flow, which penetrates a wall between two adjacent inlet channels (an Inlet/Inlet wall), turns toward the direction parallel to the wall surface, and exits to an outlet channel. The calculation model includes three bypass flows in the Inlet/Inlet wall and an Inlet/Outlet flow normal to the Inlet/Outlet wall. The flow distribution between the Inlet/Outlet wall-through flow and bypass flows calculated with Darcy's law determine PM deposit thickness on the Inlet/Outlet wall and the Inlet/Inlet wall. This calculation model considers the difference in the PM penetration depth between the Inlet/Outlet wall and Inlet/Inlet wall caused by the flow distributions at the beginning of the PM trapping process. The relationship between the gas velocity and PM penetration depth is assumed to be a quadratic function. By changing the quadratic function, the distributions of PM deposit thickness is also changed. As the difference in PM penetration depth between the Inlet/Outlet wall and Inlet/Inlet wall become small, the PM deposit thickness on the Inlet/Inlet wall is less than that on the Inlet/Outlet wall.
