Abstract

The flow fields of the actuated soft and rigid millimetric-pillars in static liquid pool are investigated by PIV measurement to obtain the mass transfer mechanism. The soft and rigid pillars are fabricated by two kinds of materials using different methods. The actuation frequency of the pillar is set at 10 Hz while the amplitude ranges from 36° to 15.4°. The experiment results show the mass transfer mechanism of these two pillars are similar. The soft pillar follows the variation of the magnetic field much better than rigid pillar at high amplitude. However, the difference in stiffness causes some difference in flow field and leads to larger mass transfer ability of soft pillar than that of rigid pillar at same amplitude.
