A NUMERICAL AND EXPERIMENTAL INVESTIGATION OF CORONA WIND HEAT TRANSFER ENHANCEMENT FROM A HORIZONTAL HEATED PLATE
Abstrakt
Heat and mass transfer between a surface and the surrounding air can be significantly enhanced through the creation of a corona wind. A fine high-voltage wire was suspended over an electrically heated and grounded flat surface. The electric body force induced a convective flow that dominated the existing natural convection. An infrared camera system was used to obtain a complete and accurate distribution of local heat transfer coefficients on the impingement surface. The experimental data are compared with the results of a numerical simulation. A dimensionless number is introduced that quantifies the relative importance of electrostatic and buoyant heat transfer. Numerical results, including electric potential distribution, flow field maps and heat transfer coefficients are presented. In addition, computed heat transfer coefficients are compared to the experimental results. The impact of electrical heating of the air on heat transfer coefficients is investigated through inclusion of a source term in the energy equation.
