THE METHOD OF CHARACTERISTICS APPLIED TO NUMERICAL SOLUTIONS OF GAS BUBBLE IMPLOSION AND FRAGMENTATION
Abstract
The implosion of an ascending free gas bubble in an irrotational, incompressible and infinitely extended liquid has been studied numerically. The method of collocation combined with the method of characteristics has been applied to allow for multivalued solutions of the bubble radius. In this way, fragmentation resulting from buoyancy-induced deviations from the spherical bubble shape has been described.
In addition to a jet formation, the results show the detachment of small gas bubbles during the inertia-controlled mode of implosion.
