BUOYANCY EFFECTS IN PLANE COUETTE FLOW HEATED UNIFORMLY FROM BELOW
Abstract
Buoyancy effects in plane Couette flow heated uniformly from below is analyzed theoretically. By employing the propagation theory we have developed, a new set of stability equations involving streamwise variations of disturbances are derived under linear theory. It is shown that the critical Rayleigh number that marks the onset of longitudinal vortex rolls increases with a decrease in Prandtl number. Based on the present stability criteria a new heat transfer correlation for mixed convection flow is proposed. For water the present predictions are found to compare favorably with available experimental data.
