NATURAL CONVECTION OF COLD WATER IN CONCENTRIC ANNULAR SPACES 5EFFECT OF THE MAXIMUM DENSITY
Résumé
The effect of density inversion on steady laminar convection heat transfer of cold water is investigated using a perturbation method. The fluid is contained in a horizontal cylindrical annulus, a constant heat flux being imposed on the inner wall and a fixed temperature on the outer one. A nonlinear equation of state with a maximum density is used to describe the inversion of density near 4°C. Solutions to the governing equations are expressed in terms of power series of the nonlinear Rayleigh number Ra. The results obtained for streamlines and isotherms, velocity and temperature profiles, and local and global Nusselt numbers are found to depend strongly on the inversion parameter γ. A particular striking result is the sharp decrease of the heat transfer in the presence of density inversion. A comparison is made with existing results.
