BOILING WATER AND THREE IMMISCIBLE ORGANIC LIQUIDS OVER A SMALL TUBE BUNDLE AT ATMOSPHERIC PRESSURE
Résumé
The immiscible aqueous binary systems with heptane, perfluoro-n-hexane and nonane were boiled in a small shell and tube boiler. It proved possible to produce vapours having a wide range of compositions in the steam/heptane system. Boiling was much enhanced compared to boiling pure water. Steam rich vapours could not be raised in the steam/PPl system. Typically for steam/hydrocarbon boiling, tests on the steam/nonane binary indicated that the film of water on the boiling surfaces above the interface is more stable with the tubes in the square than the rotated-square pitch configuration. This proved to have a marked effect on the relation between overall boiling heat transfer coefficient and the proportion of hydrocarbon in the boiler. The paper concludes with prediction of boiling behaviour of other immiscible aqueous binaries and discussion of implications of the work for design.
