SOME DOUBTFUL NATURAL CONVECTION CORRELATIONS
Résumé
The experimental results of natural convection studies are usually presented in dimensionless form and frequently correlated by an equation of the type Y = kXn. Nusselt number is generally used for the dependent variable and some combination of Grashof and Prandtl numbers for the independent variable. Since both variables contain common parameters, such as characteristic dimension, they are not truly independent. Consequently spurious correlations are sometimes produced.
It is not always obvious how these common parameters influence the correlation since they appear in different ways on each side of the equation and their ranges of variation differ markedly. These topics will be discussed and illustrated by studies chosen from the literature. Some guidelines for avoiding problems will be given.
