EFFECT OF SURFACE SHAPE ON FLOW AND HEAT TRANSFER CHARACTERISTICS IN PIPES: A NUMERICAL STUDY
要約
Using the standard k-ε turbulence model, a developing, two-dimensional, turbulent pipe flow was simulated with round convex surfaces and cavities. Uncertainty was approximated through experimental validation and grid independence. The simulation revealed circulation within the cavities. Cavity boundaries were shown to contribute significantly towards turbulence production. Convex surface and cavity presence were shown to enhance overall heat transfer while increasing pressure drop along the pipe. Compared to a smooth pipe, round cavities increased both heat transfer and pressure drop by 21 and 124 %, respectively. Concave surfaces resulted in a 19 % heat transfer enhancement and pressure drop of 193 %.
